On January 12, 2010 Haiti was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake leaving the people of the western hemisphere’s poorest country in unimaginable hardship. Immediately millions began fleeing the over populated urban capital (Port au Prince) and returning to the rural villages of their heritage to try and rebuild their lives.
The Haitian farmer is no stranger to working the land however without access to basic farming tools, seeds, water, food preservation techniques, etc. they face an almost insurmountable task of feeding their relatives and making a living from their land. Women are no better off and often have the primary responsibility to care for their children, with little opportunity to earn a steady income.
The Long Haul 100 benefits the work of Praxis International, a grassroots organization started by three Tampa Bay Area families. One of those families relocated to Haiti at the end of 2010 to begin the work of Praxis in earnest. The other families remain here working to raise funds (through events like this) and support the team on the ground in Haiti.
So, whether you are running to beat your personal best or wanting to be a part of something that is bigger than yourself, YOU can run knowing that the proceeds of the Long Haul 100 will make an EXTREME difference in the lives of those living in rural Haiti.
This race will change YOU and HAITI!
