Description
All races begin and end at the Shasta Mine Trail Parking lot in Whiskeytown Park about one mile south of the dam on Paige Bar Road. All races begin with a challenging half-mile climb on a double-track trail. I expect that well over half of the entrants will be power-walking most of this hill.
5K (approx 3 miles) runners will do the Shasta Mine Trail Loop. After the first hill is a technical downhill section, then the last 2 miles are easy except for a 1/4 mile long climb around the middle of the course (not nearly as steep as the first hill).
10K (actually a little under 7 miles) runners share the first 2 miles of the 5K course, then climb gently up Mule Town Road (dirt) to the rolling Buck Hollow Trail. The 2nd half of the course is mostly flat and very fast. All but one mile is on single track.
15K (about 9 miles) runners will follow the 10K course for four miles, then face a one-mile climb up the Salt Creek Loop Trail to the Mule Mountain Pass Trail. The climb starts gradually and gets much steeper as you near the top. The second half of the course is mostly downhill or flat, rejoining the 10K course for the last two miles.
There will be an aid station about 3 miles from the finish for the 10K and 15K runners.
