Welcome everyone to the page for The Annihilator 50K. This race is brought to you by Bigfoot Trail Runners. The race will be held on August 10th 2013 at South Mountain State Park. The race will start at 7:30am promptly. Expect about 9000' of vertical gain with an equal amount of loss. Registration will open on Ultrasignup on April 27th and with only 50 entries allowed it will sell out FAST! A wait list will start once the race fills up. This race will have have very strict cut-offs.
Tent camping is available at the park on first come first serve basis. The closest lodging is about 30-40 minutes away in Morganton, Lincolnton, Shelby, or Hickory.
There will be no refunds, bib transfers, or deferrals.
Location will be South Mountain State Park in Connelly Springs, North Carolina
Distance will be "approximately" a 50K
Elevation gain will be 9000'+ but train for more! The elevation loss will be equal!
The field will have very low cap of 50 runners and I expect will sell out fast. A wait list follow.
A portion of the proceeds will go the the park.
There will be strict cut-offs.
It is "recommended" to have completed a 50 mile race or a 50K with a minimum of 5000' of gain within the last year and half.
This race will be VERY difficult with ideal weather but in August it will be extreme! This race will have fully stocked aid stations but they will be spaced out from about 5-9 miles apart. You should be prepared for long DIFFICULT stretches between aid stations. A hydration pack is highly recommended for those that have trouble in the heat. I would not attempt this race carrying only one hand held bottle.
There is one paved section that is a little over a mile but it is a ridge top with nice views. The rest of the course is fire roads, technical single track, and LOTS of stairs.
The course is broken down into five sections.
The first is the "easiest" and is 5.5 miles with 1335' of gain and 1175' of loss. You will run Little River/Sawtooth/Chestnut Knob and it will bring you to Shinny Creek Aid Station.
The second section is the much more difficult and will make or break your race. It is about 8+ miles with some very steep climbs and gorgeous single track. You will run HQ/Shinny/Upper Falls/Lower CCC/Horseridge/Possum/HQ and back to Shinny Creek Aid Station. You will need to carry plenty of water for this section.
You will have 5 hours to complete the first two sections. (no exceptions)
The third section starts with a climb up the High Shoals Falls stairs and it will be VERY HARD. You will follow this to Upper Falls/Jacob Branch/Fox Ridge and end at Raven Rock Aid Station. This section is about 7 miles.
You will have 8 hours to reach this third aid station. (no exceptions)
The fourth section starts on paved road high up on the ridge inside the Pine Mountain gated community. No traffic will be seen here. You will follow a LONG downhill on Raven Rock/Saddleback to Equestrian Aid Station. If you have the legs this is where you can make up time on a very fast downhill for about 5 miles.
The fifth section follows Turkey Ridge/Little River/Raven Rock/Upper Falls/ Backside Trail and all the way to the finish line. This is a 4-5 mile section with the last big (non technical) climb of the day. The last mile of the race has a steep downhill that will make your quads really upset.
You will 11 hours to complete this course if you met the previous two time cut-offs.
