YO SATURNALIA!
One last hurrah before the end of the year. Runners, get ready for a fun and festive holiday treat along the trails of Squaxin Park. This Rock Candy 10K trail race is our season finale, and year-end celebration.
We start and finish at the gym and track of Reeves Middle School in Olympia's Eastside neighborhood. The race route will wind its way through the incredible woods of Squaxin Park, make use of most of these spectacular trails, and offers views of the Puget Sound and the Capitol above downtown Olympia.
We named this event after the ancient roman holiday that happened around this time of year, just over 2,000 years ago. This ancient event ‘Saturnalia’ celebrated merry-making, gift-giving and role-reversal. The rulers severed their subordinates, everyone dined together at the same table, celebrated in silly costumes, ate, drank, and had a great time. We require no strange ancient rituals for to participate at this event. Our Saturnalia doesn’t have podiums, even though we track your time. We celebrate all finishers, from first to last, and everyone gets an award with their medals. The aid station is filled with holiday treats and we aim put a smile on your face during the darkest days of the year. “Yo Saturnalia” the ancient Romans shouted. So, there “Yo Saturnalia” to you.
Let’s race the trails of Squaxin Park, together!
