The Moab 240 was created in memory of ultra runner, father, husband and accomplished 200 mile pioneer Stephen Jones. Stephen was the inspiration for this race as well as the person who first dreamed of a 200 miler in Utah, specifically a single loop 200 miler beginning and ending in Moab. Stephen died tragically in an avalanche in early 2016. In 2017 Destination Trail & the Moab 240 race along with Stephen Jones' family, created an internship scholarship in Stephen Jones’ memory to promote and encourage Recreation Resources Management students at Utah State University. The purpose of the internship scholarship is to support future recreation managers on public lands and parks in Utah and the United States by providing meaningful internship opportunities with agencies that will enhance their academic and professional careers. Stephen particularly loved the deserts of southern Utah and the Uinta Mountains and it is the hope of his family that the students who benefit from this fund will have a future positive impact on these lands for the benefit of the resource and the public. The scholarship will be given to a student each year in order to help them pay their expenses while studying Recreation Resource Management. All proceeds from this donation go directly to the scholarship fund. All funds are used for the scholarship, NO money is used for administrative costs. Scholarship is given out once a year.
